A live action Pokemon film based on the new Detective Pikachu character will enter production next year, Legendary and The Pokemon Company have announced.

Detective Pikachu will be the first live action film utilising the Pokemon franchise, which is currently riding high thanks to the record-breaking success of Pokemon GO.

Universal Pictures will distribute the film outside of Japan.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Legendary moved to close the deal once Pokemon GO took the world by storm, with Netflix said to have been keen.

Released earlier this year in Japan, Detective Pikachu features a talking Pikachu with great intelligence and a knack for solving crimes. He teams up with a boy named Tim – who is able to understand what Pikachu is saying – to solve Pokemon-related mysteries.

Since its creation in 1995 Pokemon has spawned many games, card games, TV shows and a total of 19 animated films.
