Bloober Team has been teasing the return of its first person horror Layers of Fear series with a new Unreal Engine 5-powered trailer.

While the new project doesn’t have a name yet, it does look like a return to the paintbrush and easel motifs of the first game. The original Layers of Fear launched in 2016 saw you playing as an obsessive painter. The sequel, 2019’s Layers of Fear 2, swapped the painter for an actor and featured horror icon (and upcoming Venom) Tony Todd.

In our review of the first Layers of Fear, Tom Orry gave it a score of 7. He said “Bloober has created a game that not only features plenty of unnerving imagery and audio, but plays around with the world brilliantly to make sure you’re never at ease.”

Our Josh wasn’t quite as taken with the follow-up, however. “Credit must go, of course, to Bloober Team for setting a different course for its sequel, freshening the setting and shifting its subject matter to the silvery skin of cinema. It’s just a shame that it didn’t bring the chills and scares that littered the last outing.”

Bloober Team have a very busy slate on their hands, fresh off their most recent horror title The Medium. Apparently, as well as this they’re now working on two AAA projects yet to be announced. Fans are hoping one of those could be a much-desired Silent Hill project with Konami.

As for this new Layers of Fear project, there’s no dates or formats yet, but hopefully we’ll hear more in the near future. In the meantime, check out the teaser for yourself down below.
