A mid-season patch for Overwatch 2 that dropped last night has raised the ire of fans after bringing back a fan-favourite game mode, but not in the way they had hoped.
While last night’s patch may have brought with it the Overwatch 2 Summer Games, it seems this returning event from the first game isn’t quite as fans remember it, especially when it comes to the Lucioball mode. The Rocket-League inspired mode sees two teams playing as Lucio using the hero’s attacks to punt a ball into a goal. However, a number of videos on the Overwatch subreddit have shown players attacking the ball to little or no effect, such as this one from PapJohn812.
“Glad to know it’s not just me,” Neurodrill responded. “Glad to know it’s not just me. The volleyball is horrendous and I thought I was just suffering PTSD from it when I switched to Lucioball.” BigMachiaveli went even further in their criticism, saying “I reinstalled OW just to play lucioball. I couldn’t believe how bad they broke it. As someone who played a lot of lucioball every season since the start I can attest to the fact they have made little changes that screw it up in little ways every year, but this year is beyond the pale.”
As Minddistorter says on another of the threads “I encountered the bug as well. I wait all year for this mode and its woefully disappointing. I can’t see how this bug would have moved past a single game of playtesting.” It’s a sentiment shared by many players, actually being relieved that this bug has been flagged up by several players, given it’s not yet been mentioned in the game’s latest known issues thread. “I felt like I was going crazy when this first happened to me,” says Lc3_max. “Between this, no Copa and the Gold ball in Remix being bugged as well this is a pretty disappointing first time for Lucioball in OW2.”
Bugs aren’t the only thing causing disappointment it seems, with others being sad at the lack of a Ranked version of the mode. “I was so excited to get back in, wanted to play Ranked,” says Dexrow. “No ranked made me sad, but trying to play and not being able to hit the ball just makes it a dead mode, I don’t even want to play now.”
Hopefully, Blizzard will fix the bugs with Lucioball soon, but whether it can curry back favour with a community that’s been pretty disappointed with Overwatch 2 so far, we’ll have to wait and see. There’s been a number of community-angering bugs this last few months, which has seen several of Overwatch 2’s maps temporarily removed from rotation until said bugs were squashed.
