Fans are not best pleased with Blizzard following yesterday’s announcement that it would be changing direction with its originally announced PvE plans in Overwatch 2.

Yesterday, the studio unveiled their roadmap for the next few months of content for the shooter, but also declared that they were making the ‘difficult choice’ to not proceed with the previously announced Hero Mode, talents and progression originally revealed at Blizzcon 2019. However, many fans are angry at the decision, claiming that the decision now means that the original Overwatch was taken offline for no reason.

“Insane, considering they said that they HAD TO make OW2 with the updated engine so they could do all the PVE stuff which wasn’t possible in OW1,” claims self1sch on the Overwatch subreddit. Along similar lines, many fans felt that this was the reason Overwatch 1 suffered a lack of content in its final years “So you’re telling me we went through years of no content just for 5V5 and push?” – says Soverain. “Wasn’t this the entire pitch for OW2?” asked Semajj. “Like, I don’t even know what to say. I’m just sad.”

Many fans also voiced their cynicism that the decision was financially motivated so that Blizzard could focus on microtransactions and season passes. “This game is a total disaster and should never have happened,” claims haydnc95. “It’s now just a monetized cash grab.” “Actually so depressing watching all your hopes for this game wither in real time,” said afdsafsadfds.

For its part, Blizzard has attempted to douse some of the community’s flames by pointing out that PvE isn’t cancelled altogether in the game. Executive producer Jared Neuss tweeted the following: “A clarification that I wanted to make is that, while we made the decision to cut Hero Mode + Talents, we have a lot of great PvE content coming this year. Big story missions, new cinematics, co-op events and single player Hero Mastery missions are all on the way.”

Similarly, in an interview with GameSpot, game director Aaron Keller said that the team intends to move the game’s PvE forward in other ways. “It’s the start of this big narrative where players do get to find out more about Overwatch and they do get to find out more about what’s happening in the world and what’s happening with a lot of the characters in the game. So we are really committed to the PvE side of the game and delivering that story.”

“On top of that, we have multiple cinematics coming out this year to help either set up that story that we’ll be telling in Season 6 or to further some of those characters that we’re working on. And there’s more to come.”
