Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great once in a generation success. Despite being a very niche, predominantly PC product, the game’s extremely high quality and beloved characters catapulted it into one of the best-selling games ever.
Following its success, developer Larian Studios has already upgraded its engine, founded a new storytelling department and started work on two new games.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s success means Larian can go “crazy”
Speaking to fans on social media, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated the two-year anniversary of Baldur’s Gate 3, calling the project a “life changing” game. After the studio’s history of well-received but decently-sold projects, BG3 has marked a long-deserved turning point for the team.
“Crazy to think it’s only been two years,” Vincke said. “It’s truly been life changing. Probably worth writing about one day.
The Larian Studios lead teased that the “biggest takeaway” is that the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3 is the sole reason the team can do their “next crazy thing”, which many believe is a new, big-budget Divinity game.
“How that will pan out is anyone’s guess,” Vincke continued. “But I can assure you we’re working hard to ensure you’ll have plenty of fun. Like really – loads of it. In a surprising way. And I can’t wait to show you.”
The Larian lead explained that players will need to be very “patient” as the team needs “a bit of time to make it work”, but Vinke promises it’ll “be worth it”, and everyone has faith that it will.
Not much is known about Larian’s upcoming project other than the fact that it’s probably another RPG. While there is a large chance the new project is set in the studio’s Divinity universe, Larian could literally be doing anything. A sci-fi setting? Pirates? Whatever the case, we will be there on day one, and so will millions of other fans.
