Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios has officially departed its beloved RPG with the release of Patch 8 to focus on its next ambitious project, although the team is still working on new hotfixes. While everyone knew the studio was already working on its next project—which isn’t expected to release until 2028 at the earliest—it turns out the studio is actually working on two new titles.

Speaking to GameSpot, Larian CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the team is “trying to figure out how to make two games” at the same time. However, making two titles at once is challenging simply due to how “complicated” Larian’s style of RPG is.

In an interview with the outlet’s YouTube channel, Vincke explained that the team is currently “deep in the trenches working on our next big thing”.

“It’s shaping up quite well actually, but it’s crazy ambitious,” the Larian CEO confirmed. “There’s so much new things we can do these days so yeah, complex.”

Alongside the previously teased new RPG, which the team has already made major technical upgrades for, Vincke explained that it isn’t the only project in the works at Larian. In fact, the studio is working on a second title.

“We’re trying to figure out how to make two games,” the Baldur’s Gate 3 lead explained. “So organizing ourselves for that also isn’t the easiest thing in the universe because we make complicated games with lots of permutations, lots of agency for players. So predicting when those [games] will be finished is hard, and then organizing around that is harder. Keeping ourselves busy, really.”

“I hope I can tell you in five years that we’ve cracked it, we’ve figured it out, this is what we’re doing now.”

Vincke explained that the studio wants to be in a position where it “can craft multiple RPGs side-by-side rather than going idle”. While the studio does make incredible games, there can be a lengthy period of silence. However, with the sheer amount of buzz from Baldur’s Gate 3, a faster turnaround might be best to keep capitalising on the hype the studio can now generate.

“That’s actually the main reason why we’re doing multiple projects,” Vincke said. “We have this waterfall where we have this small group that starts thinking about what we’re going to make, then this very large group that executes on it. Then when that large group is finished, if the people at the beginning aren’t ready, then everyone is f***ed because everyone has to wait.”

“I hope I can tell you in five years that we’ve cracked it, we’ve figured it out, this is what we’re doing now,” he continued. “Here’s Game One! We’re making this completely different thing, [that’s] Game Two. Then when Game Two is ready, we’ve got this entirely different thing that’s going to come.”

“If we can make this work in a good way where we can enjoy our lives, that’ll be mission accomplished. In practice it’ll probably be miserable, and there’ll be plenty of stuff that goes wrong, but that’s the goal.”

Even after the original release of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian immediately started work on its next ambitious title. It’ll be a long while until we see the studios next game actually release—whether that’s in early access like BG3 or a full release—but it’ll be very exciting when it finally does.
