We’re not talking another card battler, but a proper stealth action game in the same vein as the rest of the Metal Gear Solid series. Portable Ops takes place six years after the events in Snake Eater, and promises to be the missing link in the Metal Gear saga. Set in 1970, players will learn more about characters such as Para-Medic, Major Zero and Sigint. Players will also witness Naked Snake’s greatest tragedy, which sets into motion events of later games in the Metal Gear timeline

Portable Ops promises all the stealth-based combat that fans have come to expect from the series, but with new elements that will supposedly add even more depth to proceedings. Gone are the fixed cameras and in their place is a new third-person camera allowing the player to see more of Snake’s surroundings. Konami isn’t skimping on presentation either, with the game’s story being told through fully voiced cinematics.

Throughout the game, players will be able to recruit enemies, soldiers, and unique NPCs to form their own fighting unit, which you can take into online battles. Using the PSP’s Infrastructure mode, Portable Ops features online skirmishes and a host of game modes to play in. Take your fighting unit online, recruit new members and even trade with other players.

With the addition of a new White Flag system to the game’s multiplayer mode, battles can end in two ways: Either fight to the death, or surrender and live to fight again in the next round.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops in pencilled in for a 2007 release.
