Stats revealing that FIFA 12 outsold PES 2012 by 25:1 don’t give the full picture across all territories, according to PES team leader Jon Murphy.

“In the UK we’ve definitely lost ground,” Murphy told Eurogamer. “But that doesn’t give us the full picture across all territories.

“I think right now, there’s been a fair bit of manipulation of statistics to suit people.”

Murphy was responding to EA vice-president of Europe, Keith Ramsdale, who said that “on its first weekend, like-for-like, we’ve outsold PES by 25 times.”

Murphy was keen to point out that he doesn’t believe PES is on the back foot.

“When you say ‘on the back foot’, I totally disagree,” he stated. “We’re now on the front foot in terms of quality of product and in terms of innovation. We believe sales will follow.”

FIFA 12 earned an excellent 9/10 in our FIFA 12 review. PES 2012 came in just behind with an 8/10 in our PES 2012 review.

PES is indeed showing signs of a resurgence in terms of quality, but FIFA isn’t exactly resting on its laurels either. For this generation of consoles the battle surely can’t be won by Konami, but how the two games come out of the gate on the next generation could well determine which series is the next to dominate.
