Velan Studios has announced that dodgeball game Knockout City will go free-to-play later this year.

The developer revealed the news in a post entitled The Future of Knockout City earlier today. The change will be coming to mark the game’s 6th season, which will start this Spring. After this time, there won’t be any financial requirement to start the game. In addition, the studio has revealed they will also be self-publishing the game, taking on the responsibilities from EA.

To thank the fans who already bought the game in its first year, the team will be offering a special Season 6 Loyalty Bundle. It’ll include legendary cosmetics, XP boosts and 2000 free Holobux, which is the game’s in-game currency. The team say that self publishing the game will allow them to “fully realise our vision for the long-term future of this game.”

Velan also thanked EA for their support over the game’s first year in their statement. “We couldn’t have introduced Knockout City to the world without the incredible support of EA Originals, but now as we switch to free-to-play, the natural next step is for us to take over publishing responsibilities and work even more closely with our community.”

Before then, however, the game is launching Season Five. It’s a little lighter on content than other seasons, due to the behind the scenes work, with no Brawl Pass. However, there will be five playlists returning from previous seasons, with the season given the apt title Greatest Hits. You can check out a trailer for that below and find more information over here.

There’s no specific date for the changeover just yet, but once everything’s sorted expect Knockout City to go into free-t0-play sometime this Spring on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
