Hogwarts Legacy’s launch has been hampered by frame drops, crashing, and black screens on launch. Some players have gone as far to claim that the problems with the game are caused by the latest Nvidia drivers, though we’re not quite sure that’s the case. The latest issue seems to be with a possible memory leak in the game – which seems a reasonable explanation for the recent problems with the game.
Let’s jump straight into the possible Hogwarts Legacy memory leak, and how to fix it.
Does Hogwarts Legacy have a memory leak?
Before we try and fix the problem, we need to know if the problem actually exists.

Several players of the game turned to reddit to ask if the game has a memory leak, and it seems that the general consensus agrees with this opinion.
To further add to this, the Hogwarts Legacy system requirements state that if you want to play the game, you’re going to need a whopping 32GB for 4K Ultra settings. By most standards, this is quite high, so it’s clear that the game isn’t quite optimised for PC just yet.
We think that it’s likely that the console version runs just fine on 16GB RAM as the game was likely developed for console before being ported over to PC and upscaled with flashier textures. This is a common occurrence with PC games nowadays, and there’s little we can do to avoid it.
In light of this – we think that it’s highly possible that there is a memory leak in Hogwarts Legacy, which is why so much RAM is being consumed by the game.
More evidence is provided by the “OUT OF VIDEO MEMORY” error message that many are reporting on. This is the final nail in the coffin regarding if the game has a memory leak.
We’re going to be keeping a close eye out for the Day One patch with the hopes that it resolves these memory issues, though it seems nothing is mentioned regarding memory leaks.
How to fix Hogwarts Legacy memory leak
If you’ve experienced the Hogwarts Legacy OUT OF VIDEO MEMORY message, here’s what we’d recommend you try.
- Restart your PC
- Disable ray-tracing
- Verify integrity of game files
- Re-install the game
- Re-install relevant graphics drivers
There’s not really much you can do aside from this as a memory leak is a major issue.
