While hiring an NPC to watch your back in battle royale shooter may seem like a solid plan, some players are finding out that it does have its drawbacks.

None more so than pansdisme, a user on the Fortnite subreddit, who’s shared a hilarious clip of a recent game where their NPC they hired – Metal Mouth – wound up causing more harm than it did good. In the clip, the player is sniping from the top of a tall structure they’ve built, and given they’ve got the defensible high ground, you’d think all would be good and they’d come out on top of this battle. However, soon enough, their NPC gun for hire comes into frame, and thoughtfully tries to help attack the enemy below. The only issue is, they’re an explosives expert, and as the opponent has run under, their throw bounces back off the walls of the structure, blowing it up and sending both pansdisme and the NPC crashing to the floor below, where gravity ends their game in a heartbreaking ninth place finish.

Naturally, their tale of woe has given those who’ve seen it plenty of chuckles. “I can hear benson screaming ‘You’re fired!’ as you hit the ground,” says Thelivingshotgun. “I laughed out loud for that one – thanks for sharing!” responded Fortunes_Foe with a similar sentiment. “That couldn’t get any worse” remarked doomsdreaming233 in solidarity with the plight of poor pansdisme.

In fact, a lot of the community appear to be sympathetic to the issue, saying that on occasion, the NPC AI isn’t all that bright. “Dude, the cluster bomb NPC is the most unstable mfer in fn universe,” claims Deathduck. “I’ll be completely alone and dude will just start bombing s**t. Then I’m ducking and weaving trying to locate the enemy who doesn’t exist.” “The AI characters are f*****g useless this season,” agrees Logbotherer99.

There are those who try and offer some advice for the future, namely cereal_killah_1980 who points out you can command bots – so hopefully pandisme can avoid something similar happening in the future. But for now, they’ll hopefully look back on this slip up and laugh about it. For more on the game, check out our guide on how to turn on Aim Assist in Fortnite Chapter 5.
