Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is just months away, offering a brand-new Hideo Kojima cinematic experience on PlayStation 5. Coming six years after the awesome original game, Kojima’s upcoming sequel takes players to Australia for a wholly different story with significantly different gameplay.

In a recent interview with EDGE Magazine, via GamesRadar, Kojima revealed that the game has turned into more of a spiritual follow-up to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain than anyone expected. The video game auteur explained that the similarities to that game even surprised him, saying “I felt that myself during testing”.

Death Stranding 2 is closer to Metal Gear Solid V

As Kojima’s last entry in the Death Stranding series, the upcoming sequel has changed to a more action-stealth title than the previous game. Similar to how MGS2: Guns of The Patriots was more action-focused than its predecessor, Kojima wanted to evolve the delivery game with a more blockbuster take.

“There aren’t many games about delivery, so we first had to get people accustomed to it,” the director said. “For the sequel, we wanted to allow players that want to fight to do so more freely.”

As for the comparisons between MGS and Death Stranding 2, the sequel has a number of VR challenges that players can complete which are more than similar to the director’s past VR Missions in MGS. Additionally, the home base of the Magellan has been so expanded that Kojima admits it feels like returning to base in The Phantom Pain.

“When you return to your bed on the Magellan, it’s the same feeling as returning to the plant in Metal Gear [Solid V],” the iconic game developer explained.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is still, at its core, a very different beast, but it seems that Kojima is more willing to sprinkle in his past with Metal Gear for the sequel. As the developer gets ready to dive back into the stealth genre with Physint, the sequel appears to be a middle ground.

Alongside Physint, Kojima is also working on the experimental horror game OD with NOPE director Jordan Peele. Starring Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier, very little is known about the upcoming video game, but players will “interface with characters trapped in a surreal, clinical, and often broken reality”.
