Hideo Kojima will stop directing the Death Stranding series after the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. With the historic game director moving onto new games such as the Xbox-exclusive horror game OD and the Metal Gear-like Physint, the gaming auteur will allow others to play within his mysterious sandbox.

Speaking to VGC, Kojima explained that he already has an idea for Death Stranding 3, but he doesn’t plan on making the game. Instead, some other creator will have to turn Kojima’s ideas into reality while he works on expanding his other ideas.

Hideo Kojima won’t make Death Stranding 3

In an interview with the outlet, Kojima explained that the Plate Gate concept—an in-game feature that acts as a portal to another continent—could allow for endless sequels. However, there’s only one solid concept that the creator has for a potential third game.

“If I use this Plate Gate concept, I could make endless sequels,” Kojima said. “I, of course, don’t have any plans to do that, but I already have a concept for another sequel. I am not going to make it myself, but if I passed it on to someone else, they could probably make it.”

For Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima’s game moves away from the United Cities of America for a new setting of Australia using the Plate Gate concept. Essentially, with every corner of the world free to explore, the series could go on for as long as the director wants.

Kojima explained that the original idea for the upcoming sequel would’ve seen the player “go around disconnecting everything you connected, because you learn that connecting was a big mistake”. However, the director explained that players would just be “reusing the same environment”, similar to Zelda’s Tears of the Kingdom, and “that didn’t feel right”.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be released on 26th June exclusively on PlayStation 5. While not yet announced, a PC version of the game will likely release in the future as well. Additionally, the first game is now available on PS4, PS5, PC, iOS and Xbox Series consoles.
