Helldivers 2’s Escalation of Freedom update brings a new difficulty level alongside fresh missions and enemies to beat. One of these new foes is the Impaler, a name that must be familiar to players of the previous Helldivers title. While we’ve only got a single image to picture just how much of a threat it can be, the old guard has thankfully mobilised to tell us more about this massive, armoured foe. From evading its tentacles to what its weak spots are, here’s what you need to know.

How to beat the Impaler

User This-Examination5165 details how serious of a threat the Impaler is on a Reddit thread, noting that it “prefer[s] to attack from off-screen or a faraway range by digging its head into the ground, revealing its tentacles.” In appearance, the enemy will look like the relative of a Charger. While the original Helldivers game had a top-down perspective, the new threat might also rely on this attack pattern to protect its weak spots. Expect the tentacles to pack a punch, especially since Flamethrowers barely harmed it. Damage the tentacles enough and they will retract, as seen in the trailer.

As for the weak spot you need to look out for, aim at its “orange face that is revealed once the tentacles have been activated. Shooting it or throwing some grenades at it should do significant damage to it. An EAT to the face while it is revealed should completely take it out.” And if you think running and regrouping is an option, think again. Its tentacles can reach you before you sprint to safety, meaning that you should call allies in to finish the job as quickly as possible.

Considering how absurdly powerful stratagems are, an Orbital Railcannon might just be able to down the behemoth. But if you’re relying on weapons, you’ll need the explosive firepower of the Recoilless Rifle or the Railgun. Players like matthewthwong also noted that stun grenades or EMS strikes might be able to stun the foe long enough to get some shots into its weak spot. That should get you started on the right foot against this menacing foe. You’ll get to sink some lead and explosives into these foes once the Escalation of Freedom update drops.
