Arrowhead has lovingly crafted one of the best modern multiplayer games with Helldivers 2, offering satisfying weapons and stratagems. However, with missions restricted to just single faction fights across the galaxy, sometimes the game does feel a bit stale.
While the Battle for Claorell recently showed Helldivers 2 at its best, the latest Major Order also showed the game at its most repetitive. But there is an easy — maybe not developmentally easy — way to bring a tonne of variety into the game: multi-faction fights.
Helldivers 2 needs multi-faction fights
Right now, missions in H2 only see you fight against a single faction. With the Automatons on the left of the Galaxy Map and the Termanids on the right, you always know what faction you’re fighting and what loadout to bring.
The introduction of multi-faction missions, allowing Automatons and Termanids to battle each other or team up against players, would add a host of new variety to the game.
Right now, Helldivers 2 doesn’t really make use of its galactic scale. Outside of Major Orders and the shift of planet occupation, the segregation of enemies into their own zones does make the game feel more restrictive.
While there are teases of interactivity, such as Automatons teasing the arrival of The Illuminate, enemy factions feel very separate from each other. Imagine completely wiping out Automaton fabricators only to find out they were exterminating bug breaches before you arrived leading to the arrival of chargers or even a Bile Titan as you try to extract.
What if the end of a bug mission saw Automaton forces enter the planet in drop ships in an attempt to take over, adding a new secondary objective to hellbomb their newly formed base of operations.
Variety, Freedom and the Super Earth way
Adding this type of variety and randomness to Helldivers 2 is no small feat, and it may not even be possible for Arrowhead to do. With the game running on an unsupported, defunct game engine, the addition of multi-faction missions could be a huge challenge.
However, if it’s possible, this could make the PS5 and PC multiplayer game feel more than just a mission-by-mission play and a truly interactive world. It would be awesome to see Hulks taking on chargers, burning away nurseries while players sneak past to take out an Automaton Jammer.
Nevertheless, the future of Helldivers 2 is looking bright. Following the release of the Chemical Agents Warbond and the arrival of some much-needed buffs, Arrowhead’s game is more fun than ever before.
