Arrowhead are “locked in for a busy month” ahead of the upcoming release on Xbox consoles. While they are focusing largely on bug fixing and optimization for the time being, they do have plans for the future. These plans include making the game more difficult, but it will have to be through means other than simply adding “more enemies”. Regarding enemies, a Helldivers 2 developer has confirmed they are “continually assessing” enemy AI, but they can’t tell when a “solution” will arrive in response to feedback from the community.
Arrowhead are “continually assessing” Helldivers 2 enemy AI
On the Helldivers Discord, Arrowhead developer, Youssef Khatib, was asked about enemy AI. The user asked, “Is there any chance bots operating machine gun emplacements will receive improvements on their reaction speed and view distance?”. The user elaborated that “Right now it’s extremely easy to walk up to a machine gun emplacement and kill the bot on it before they even realize you’re there”.
The user added, “Ideally, they should have the same aggression as the infamous fortress turrets… their low durability, damage and accuracy would make such aggression way more balanced to play against”. Lastly, the user also asked if we can expect a buff for the Overseers, suggesting that “Illuminate Overseers should charge towards the player while they have their shield up, instead of simply standing still”.
In response to the above suggestions and feedback about machine gun emplacements, Khatib said the issues are “due to a myriad of reasons for how AI system works and how it prios [prioritises] targets”. He added Arrowhead are “continually assessing it, but I can’t tell you what and when there’s going to be a solution sadly”.
The developer further stated, “But generally Fortress Turrets have their own setup and works completely differently from troopers on emplacement”.
Regarding the suggested buff for Illuminate Overseers, Khatib said, “Shield Charges, ah yes nice! Thanks for the Feedback”. This doesn’t guarantee we will see a buff resulting in them charging towards players with shields up, but at least it’s been acknowledged as a good suggestion.
In addition to all the above, Khatib has previously stated Arrowhead want to continue the trend of adding “more complex” enemies to the battlefield.
