Helldivers 2 fans are always looking out for new content. Fortunately, new content appears to be on the way soon with the Xbox release seemingly coinciding with a Halo crossover. While new content is always exciting us for fans, it is making it harder for Arrowhead to maintain the game’s performance as the Helldivers 2 CEO has explained that the team’s biggest problem is “churning out” new content as it results in a lot of “technical debt”.
Helldivers 2 new content results in “technical debt”
Following the release of the newest Helldivers 2 trailer hyping the game’s imminent release on Xbox consoles, Arrowhead CEO, Shams Jorjani, responded to a lot of questions from the community on Discord. On the social media platform, the CEO once again covered issues with the game’s performance.
In response to the community, Jorjani stated that Arrowhead are “hard at work making sure the general game quality improves as we approach the Xbox release”. The CEO admitted Arrowhead “know quality and performance ain’t great for some… [and they] want to keep improving it and to make sure every [update] release keeps quality/performance going in the right direction”.
Unfortunately, there are problems because of “Old tech” and Arrowhead “going fast on new stuff”. Another dilemma stems from the fact HD2 “pivoted 5 times during development and [was] originally built to be waaay smaller”.
As for how much “technical debt” HD2 is suffering from, Jorjani responded, “A lot,” and said “The problem is also that we keep churning out so much new stuff” as it just adds to the woes with performance and optimization. This is why Arrowhead need to find another way of making the game more difficult than simply adding more enemies as this would make performance “tank even more”.
Fortunately, there are plans in motion. The Arrowhead CEO revealed that the studio is “slowly beefing up the engineering team [to] tackle more and more of the tech debt”. This will hopefully help Arrowhead manage with the game’s optimization and performance as they keep adding new content to keep players invested.
