Publisher Nacon has announced a new action-adventure game entitled Hell is Us, coming to new-gen consoles and PC next year.

The game is the new project from Rogue Factor, who were behind 2020 RPG Necromunda: Underhive Wars. However, they’re stepping away from the universe of Games Workshop for this brand new original IP. The new game’s creative director also happens to be Jonathan Jacques-Belletête who was previously art director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. He also most recently worked on last year’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

The press release bills the game as a third person action adventure game set in a semi-open world. However, the announcement also claims the game will be in “a new genre, one where players explore environments to find information all by themselves”. They’ll be playing as an as-yet-unnamed character, who’s trying to uncover their past in a country ravaged by civil war.

As you’ve probably gathered from the trailer below though, this is no ordinary country. Supernatural creatures that resemble monuments and headstones known as ‘the Calamity’ have been terrorising the region. Thankfully, you’re armed with just the weapons that have been specially forged to defeat these monsters.

Jonathan Jacques-Belletête himself offers a bit more info on this new genre stuff, or specifically its aims: “Our goal with Hell is Us is to bring back true adventure and exploration. There’s no need for a detailed quest log or precise waypoint on the map: we want players to feel the thrill of adventure, guided by their feelings and instincts.”

We’ll have to wait and see what this means in practice. For now, Hell is Us is currently targeting a 2023 release date on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
