Halo is known for having some iconic weapons. The Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, Plasma Pistol and so many more. While all of those weapons are present in 343 Industries’ latest entry into the Halo series, Halo Infinite, there is one weapon players are calling out for the return of. The Plasma Rifle.

The Plasma Rifle has been a staple of Halo’s weapon roster since the series first began back in 2001 with the release of Halo: Combat Evolved. However, apart from an appearance in Halo 5: Guardians the weapon has remained noticeably absent throughout 343’s new entries in the Halo series, namely Halo 4 and Halo Infinite. This has led fans to call for the weapon’s return on social media.

While variations such as the Storm Rifle and Pulse Carbine have been introduced in recent entries as extensions of the Plasma Rifle one player noted this as “a setback rather than a step forward.” While canonically speaking the change to the Storm Rifle and Pulse Carbine is a result of cheaper manufacturing costs following the end of the initial Human-Covenant war, the player said that “in both lore and real-life utility the Plasma Rifle always had a greater advantage.” The Brute Plasma Rifle, which was introduced in Halo 2, is still used by the Banished faction in lore so it seems rather odd that the weapon appears nowhere in Halo Infinite.

Alongside this, fans also pointed to the weapon’s distinct non-human design. This obviously makes sense since the Plasma Rifle wasn’t designed to be used by humans. One player argued that the replacement of the weapon for a more conventional rifle look actually takes away from the very purpose of its design. They said, “It made a lot more sense for this weapon to exist rather than just replacing it with something else that looks more like a conventional rifle and not an alien design cause that was the whole point.”

The Plasma Rifle isn’t the only weapon noticeably absent from Halo Infinite and whether it’ll make some form of a return in the future is really anyone’s guess. In other Halo news, Halo Infinite players are pessimistic about the game’s Max Rank reward and Halo Infinite finally has Infection, and it’s even better than you remember.
