With Grand Theft Auto 6 on the horizon, many gamers are worried about the game’s launch price. Gamers aren’t alone as rival developers fear the final GTA 6 price could end up increasing the cost of all games well into the future.
Will the GTA 6 price change everything?
Currently, games are still recovering from the shift to a $70 price standard, a $10 increase over the price of games for decades. However, with GTA 6 costing billions to develop over the past decade, it could end up costing even more on launch day.
Baldur’s Gate 3 director of publishing Michael Douse explained on Twitter that an increased price for the next GTA will cause other studios to also increase their prices.
In a thread complaining about the tiered-payment release of Star Wars Outlaws, Douse explained that games should cost more than they do. However, studios are currently waiting for GTA 6 to set the precedent.
“Almost all games should cost more at a base level because the cost of making them (inflation, for one) is outpacing pricing trends,” Douse said. “But I don’t think we’ll get there with DLC promises so much as quality and communication. Everyone’s just waiting for GTA6 to do it.”
How much will GTA 6 cost?
While unconfirmed at the time of writing, the GTA 6 price has been predicted to be higher than $70 since its announcement. Despite a planned GTA online successor likely to recoup the game’s $2 billion budget, publisher Take-Two could be planning a higher cost of entry on launch.
Many have theorised that GTA 6 could be the first $100 game since the days of the SNES. However, this has not been confirmed — or even hinted at — by the game’s developer or publisher.
With the GTA 6 release date scheduled for next year, only time will tell what the game has in store for us.
