“Gran Turismo”, the beloved and long running racing simulator videogame series from developers Polyphony Digital and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to become a big budget Hollywood feature film courtesy of Sony Pictures.
Said to be based on a true story, seeing a young “Gran Turismo” videogame player taking all of the experience that they have gained playing the racing simulator series and then using it to train as a professional race car driver before entering and subsequently winning several professional real world races.

In casting news first broken by The Hollywood Reporter, Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings franchise, Pirates of the Carribean franchise, Carnival Row), has signed on for the movie in addition to already announced cast members, David Harbour, and Archie Madekwe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s article about the casting, Bloom is said to be playing “a hungry marketing exec who is selling the sport of motor racing … and just may believe in its art, too.“

The movie is scheduled for release worldwide on 11th August 2023.

The movie is set to release, initially, exclusively in theatres, and then when its theatrical run has ended. It will see its home video release, which is also likely to include a release on streaming services globally as well.
What is the story of “Gran Turismo”?
The official log line for the movie states:
“Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.“
Based on this logline, it appears that the movie will be centered around the GT Academy, and either feature a fictional character taking part in the real life GT Academy, thus allowing the movie to still be marketed as being “Based on a true story“. Or, it will be based on the life and career of one of the Academy’s real life graduates who went on to become a professional race car driver such as Jann Mardenborough.
Who stars in “Gran Turismo”?
David Harbour stars as an, as yet unnamed, retired race car driver who teaches Madekwe’s character how to drive
Orlando Bloom stars as an, as yet unnamed, marketing exec, presumably involved with the GT Academy
Archie Madekwe stars as the, as yet unnamed, “teenage Gran Turismo player“, although, I strongly believe based on Madekwe’s filmography and that they are an English actor, that they could very well be playing real life GT Academy winner and professional race car driver, Jann Mardenborough, who is Welsh.
