Gran Turismo 7 players have been unable to access the game’s online modes for 24 hours due to an issue with a recent patch.

Developer Polyphony Digital took the game’s servers offline yesterday to apply a new patch. However, the studio ended up extending the maintenance, informing fans via the following statement. “Due to an issue found with Update 1.07, we are extending the current server maintenance period. We will confirm the completion time as soon as possible.”

The downtime has now extended to over 24 hours. At the time of writing fans are still unable to access any of the game’s online multiplayer modes such as Sport. However, the maintenance also means that players can’t access the single player campaign mode either as that also requires a connection to the internet. The only modes currently available are the game’s Arcade modes and Music Rally.

Though Polyphony have apologised for any inconvenience, at the moment they’ve offered no further explanation for the downtime. As noted by Video Games Chronicle, fans are also heavily criticising the game’s microtransactions. Players had found that the patch reduced the payout of several races, seemingly pushing players towards buying Gran Turismo credits for real money.

Back in September, creator Kazunori Yamauchi justified the game’s always online requirement for campaign mode. In an interview he claimed the reasoning was “to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data”. Hopefully, we’ll hear of a resolution soon, especially considering the game behind it is very good. So much so, that we gave Gran Turismo 7 a 10 in our review.

UPDATE 16:30 GMT: The game is now back online, with producer Kazunori Yamauchi providing a statement explaining the extended downtime.
