Gun Media and IllFonic want to reduce the level of team-killing in Friday the 13th: The Game, so the ability to kill other players using weapons is being removed. In the next update, the shotgun, machete and other weapons will no longer have an effect on friendly players. Don’t worry though, you can still use the car to run people over, that’ll do the job.

In a post on Reddit, the developer outlined the reasons for this change saying, ‘rampant team-killing that has unfortunately been abused by players on all platforms’ and that games have ‘turned into more of a Battle Royale scenario to a point our team feels a change needs to be made’. However the car still remains a deadly means of dispatching team-mates, to stop the car being abused ‘We decided on this as the alternative was abused during our beta where users would simply stand in front of the car, effectively blocking it from moving’. Other items such as traps can still cause death, but will no longer result in an XP penalty.

The developers believe that the ability to hurt other counsellors remains a vital game mechanic, but that these steps will curb abuse by rogue players. At this moment in time weapons will still be lethal in private matches with the developer stating that, ‘We will include this mechanic in private matches for now, with the hope of better options in the future’.

Friday the 13th: The Game is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
