Players of the popular battle royale shooter Fortnite are raving about a genius strategy to hide them from pings ripped straight out of the movie Predator.

A thread by Brightworkdotuk over on the FortniteBR subreddit has revealed that the jungle biome’s environmental features aren’t just aesthetic but serve a practical purpose, as coating yourself in mud stops you being marked by items like the flare gun. “I was riding my dinosaur and someone shot a flare up. I thought ‘S***, time to run away Rexsawus’ – but no, I was not marked.” And as Michael_Swag notes “To add to this, if you’re marked and you get covered in mud, you will stop being marked.”

This works both ways, however, as this has also made players realise that the also recently-introduced cloak gauntlets don’t hide your thermal signature. Players neglecting this fact should take heed of Medium_Boysentberry64’s tale “I used this fact to melt a guy who thought he was hiding in the final circle.” Similarly, Brianjlowry says of a separate instance “I 100% took one to the dome, just chilling and looking around, thinking I was invisible.

While some players are pointing out this was previously mentioned in the game’s announcement of the flare gun and debuting the cloaking gauntlets, it seems it went under the radar for a lot of others. There’s also a number of players who are asking for more opportunities to use mud cloaks elsewhere in the game. “Sucks that mud is only in 1 of the 5 biomes,” laments Faramzo. But Magicmushi has a great idea: “Maybe we should have some sort of mud item to help benefit the augment, maybe mud chugs or something.” Cozypan may have hit the proverbial nail on the head with their suggestion: “Mud bomb! Just remix the chrome splashes a little.”

So next time you find yourself up against another player in the jungle hunting you down, you might want to take some advice from Arnie and mud yourself up. Elsewhere in Fortnite, players are also using the new mud to pull off an amazing slide cancel glitch.
