Those playing battle royale shooter Fortnite have been enjoying the recent crossover with Futurama, but one character is by far and away players favourite, at least according to the game’s subreddit.
A number of threads celebrating Bender have popped up over the last few hours, with players praising not just the skin, but the NPC version of the character who’s got their own unique dialogue when you meet him on the battlefield. In fact, according to one thread, he actually has 84 unique phrases, making him the NPC with the most so far. “Oh my god, I really wish more NPCs had dialogue like this,” exclaims DenkThomas. “The amount of personality you get from these lines is insane.”
Other users are similarly full of praise for the character. “That’s amazing, love the effort put into this.” says Vinsmokewhoswho. “Someone at Epic was having fun with this update.” agrees InvestigatorUnfair. “Best conversation I’ve seen in a while,” adds ImaFreemason in a post highlighting one of these dialogues that references the episode where Bender ends up having a baby with a vending machine. “I’m so happy with this collab,” says Calm-Feedback, “Been a huge fan of the show for a long time and I kinda wished this would come to Fortnite.”
Inevitably, fans now want to see more Futurama collaborations in the future in Fortnite, and they have plenty of ideas on where to go in the future – including of course, more characters such as Zoidberg. While he’s represented in emote form, he’s not yet a skin as HardwareJedi points out. There’s even a suggestion from Mattercorn who wants Nixon’s head in a glass jar as a future back bling. A few users are also slightly disappointed that voice actor John DiMaggio doesn’t provide any actual voiceover work for the character, with Bender’s dialogue entirely delivered through text. But these are relatively minor quibbles on a collaboration that appears to have gone down well.
It’s a marked contrast to the last few updates, which haven’t been received too well in the Fortnite community. Players lambasted the Summer Escape event for a lack of content, and have even called this season “the most lifeless in history”. Hopefully, this marks the start of a turnaround, and if Epic are stuck for ideas for future seasons, the community are willing to help out there too.
