The BBC and the Royal Albert Hall have announced the first ever Gaming Prom will take place this Summer as part of the annual BBC Proms event.
Entitled Prom 21: From 8-Bit to Infinity, the show will feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and take place on August 1. It’ll be one of 72 proms that make up this year’s event that starts in July and goes through to September. Robert Ames will be the conductor as the orchestra plays a range of classical pieces from some big name games.
Confirmed for the programme so far is the European premiere of the score from last November’s Battlefield 2042. There’ll also be a performance of Jessica Curry’s I Have Begun My Ascent from Dear Esther. The show will also feature excerpts from Kow Otani’s piece from Shadow of the Colossus and Yoko Shimomura’s work from the Kingdom Hearts series.
Though classical performances of game soundtracks are fairly common these days, it does mark the first official Gaming Prom in BBC Proms history. The event has been going since 1895, so it’s certainly a long overdue addition. Tickets for the event will go on sale next month, on May 21 at 9am UK time. The event will also be broadcast on BBC Four on UK TV screens on Friday August 5. It’ll also be available to watch and listen online and via the BBC Sounds app.
