New studios are regularly formed from the ashes of other studios or following the release of titles when developers leave to pursue other projects. This is the case with this new studio, which has been formed by some industry-leading developers, including ex-Helldivers 2 staff.
The new studio, Blue Scarab Entertainment, is a Sweden-based company that managed to secure $7 million led by NetEase Games to develop its first video game, which is said to be “a story-driven MMORPG built using Unreal Engine 5, with a unique blend of cozy escapism and true-crime.” The new studio will be led by CEO Colin Cragg and CTO Enno Rehling, who has worked on games such as Anarchy Online and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.
Blue Scarab Entertainment also features many other industry veterans who have worked on games such as World of Warcraft, Helldivers 2, Battlefield, Marvel’s Avengers, Angry Birds, Prison Architect, and PAYDAY 2.
The Studio Creative Director, Craig Morrison, began his gaming career as a journalist for IGN before spending much of his career working for Funcom and Blizzard, where he was the Principal Designer for World of Warcraft. Following that, he spent over 2 years at DICE under EA working on the Battlefield franchise.
Ashley Nicollette Blood has joined the studio as the Community and Marketing Director, the same role they held at Arrowhead Game Studios working on Helldivers 2 up until February 2024.
There is no more information on the upcoming project, the studio was only formed in February 2024 and secured funding on July 17th, so development will be in the very early stages, but this is a project we will be keeping our eyes on and look forward to seeing this new game when more information is available.
