FIFA Street 3 is EA’s latest entry in its trick-obsessed arcade football series, but it’s only coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Given that the Wii’s motion controllers seem a perfect fit for the fun nature of the game, Pro-G asked FIFA Street 3 producer Joe Nickolls why the team focussed on next-gen hardware.

The horsepower with the new next-generation consoles, everyone automatically assumes the only thing cool about a next-gen console is how cool it looks and the visuals. But really what it is, is the computing power, and the power under the hood of the game,” Nickolls told Pro-G.

There were a lot of things that we wanted to do with the animation, with the AI engine and the behaviours that really took the horsepower of the next-gen consoles. The animation tool ANT works on the next-gen consoles only, right now, because it’s such a heavy technological load for the computer to handle. We went with next-gen to prove that we could make this game more fun to play and more responsive,” Nickolls added.

ANT is EA’s latest animation tool, which allows the many animations in the game to seamlessly blend into each other. Older titles often stumble when one animation leads into another, but in FIFA Street these virtual seams are invisible.
