In the final version of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s bangable bear bro Halsin is a great character that has a quite a bit less depth than other party members. While the character is still a great addition to the game, early versions of the game had a major change that some would argue added a lot more depth to his story.
Discovered by a fan datamining the game on Tumblr, scrapped parts of the brilliant RPG appear to take place in an “alternate universe” where Halsin is partially responsible for the Shadow Curse you’re tasked with lifting in Act 2.
Baldur’s Gate 3 changed Halsin a lot
As discovered by user Merrinla, scrapped journal entries still available in the game files reveal that Halsin accidentally killed Ketheric Thorn’s daughter Isobel with Sorrow, a glaive that—in the final game—belongs to Thorn.
“I can’t remember what happened with any clarity,” reads Halsin’s journal entry. “We were negotiating. She with […] I led the druids. […] words grew heated […] threw the first punch. It was mayhem.
[…] stared at me, my glaive’s blade buried in her stomach and shock in her eyes. I can’t believe she wanted to hurt me. It was pure instinct – the heat of combat.”
In the final game, both Isobel and her mother, Melodia, are struck with an illness. In response, a mad Ketheric decimated by grief unleashes the Shadow Curse, a curse which Halsin is adamant about lifting.
In the unfinished version of the game, it seems that Ketheric and Halsin would be much more intertwined with each other than in the final game. With early versions of the RPG also planning to have Ketheric Thorn as a recruitable party member, the possible dynamic between the two could’ve been amazing.
However, Baldur’s Gate 3 is already an absolutely stacked game. With so many different choices and classes and party members, there are thousands of hours to be enjoyed in the released version of BG3.
As fans get to grips with the game’s cracked mod tools, players also have access to entirely custom campaigns. As modders create campaigns based around rock concerts and bring fans back to locations from BG2 with their new party. While Larian may be leaving Faerun behind in favour of a brand-new game, fans will be sticking with it for a long while.
