Larian Studios officially announced that it was planning to close the book on Baldur’s Gate 3 earlier this year, but that was before the announcement of the game’s massive Patch 8 update. However, after a year of amazing support, BG3’s next patch is seemingly the last “major” update for the RPG as the studio moves onto something new.

Baldur’s Gate 3 devs leave Faerun behind

In a blog post detailing the awesome additions to BG3 in Patch 8, Larian explained that this will be the last major update to the role-playing game. With cross-play, photo mode and twelve new subclasses coming to the game, there’s enough content to keep fans playing for years to come. And that’s without even delving into cut content mods and complete campaigns fans are working on.

Larian revealed that future updates for the RPG likely won’t be as big as Patch 8 as the studio moves to “stranger shores”, teasing the developer’s next project. Planned to release in 2028 at the very earliest, the Baldur’s Gate 3 studio’s next game is expected to be another RPG, but nothing is confirmed.

“Before we bid Faerûn adieu in search of stranger shores, we have one more major patch waiting around the corner,” Larian said while announcing the new update.

This doesn’t mean that Larian Studios is done with Baldur’s Gate 3 yet, but future updates of the game likely won’t be as big as the upcoming patch. After Patch 8 releases sometime in February 2025, the studio will still work on hotfixes and minor patches for the game, but major features may be done with.

After a year of release, Larian’s work on BG3 has resulted in some truly amazing updates, even adding more endings to the game and adding mod support to its console versions. In a world of live-service games, Larian has supported its DRM-free, single-player game better than many online titles. It’s a truly amazing feat.
