Former DriveClub director Paul Rustchynsky has confirmed his next game will be revealed later this year.
As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, Rustchynsky made the declaration on his Twitter account. He’s currently based at the new Liverpool studio of the Avalanche Studios Group unveiled in June of 2020. They’ve been working on a new game for the past year, he says, which will be revealed at some point in 2022.
Perhaps most intriguingly, the director has confirmed that the new game won’t be a racer. This may be a surprise, as it’s the genre most associated with the developer who rose to prominence at Evolution Studios. In addition to DriveClub on the PlayStation 4, Rustchynsky also worked on MotorStorm and Onrush. He also worked on Project Cars 3 following Evolution’s absorption by Codemasters in 2016. Rustchynsky departed Codemasters in 2020 to join Avalanche along with many other members of the original Evolution team.
“So sorry, no DRIVECLUB sequel, MotorStorm successor or ONRUSH offshoot,” he tweeted on the new project. “This is something very different to anything I’ve worked on before”. Responding to replies on Twitter, he also added “There are more projects being worked on at Avalanche than most people would expect!”
Finally, Paul was also asked about a potential DriveClub sequel, but alas that doesn’t look likely. “The chance of a direct sequel is incredibly slim,” he said, “but I’d love to be involved in a spiritual successor if the opportunity ever came up.” It’s a shame, as we were big fans of the original at the time.
To set some expectations, I'm not working on a racing game.
