The Diablo community have been praising Blizzard for the early access launch of Diablo 4 on PC, with some even going so far as to calling it the developer’s “smoothest launch ever”.

A glance over the various Diablo subreddits proves a refreshing change from the norm, as a not-insignificant number of threads praising the launch can be found, beginning with this one from AbraKdabra. “I just completed Act 1 at level 16, stayed connected the whole time and not even a bit of lag. Blizzard really outdid themselves and this game feels f*****g amazing. Now it’s time for the new content.”

Others have been inclined to agree, with Diablo 3’s infamous launch-weekend queues and Error 34 on launch now but a distant memory to users like Strategos81. “Not even a minute in the queue. Not a single hiccup or crash, no rubberbanding, no license issues, patch in a size of an old CD, great framerate of XsX. Looks like Blizzard nailed this release so good. Now I need to survive a few hours of work, so I can return to Sanctuary.”

It may be a little early to call the pre-launch predictions entirely correct, however – especially those playing on the PlayStation 5 – “PS5 players are like f**k off” is the succinct top response on Strategos81’s post from dogpoopandbees. Of course, there’s also the widely reported licensing issues that other PS5 players have been facing, which has been widespread enough that Blizzard has officially responded that they’re looking into it. (Although some users have found an unlikely work around to fix it in the meantime.)

Of course, there’s a multitude of differences between Diablo 3’s launch and now, even aside from the fact we are 12 years later and even considerations like internet infrastructure etc looks much different than it did back then. It’s also worth pointing out that this iteration is a multi-format release on day one, and this is an early access release, so server strain is likely to be tested further when the general release takes place on Tuesday – but it’s still mightily impressive that Diablo 4’s first early access launched day hasn’t cast the same long shadow as Diablo 3’s did – and especially when you consider the technical issues on PC that have marred recent launches of games that aren’t as heavily reliant on online such as Redfall and Star Wars Jedi Survivor.
