Blizzard has walked back on a previous blog post that claimed that Diablo 4 mounts could only be unlocked and used after you’ve completed the main story line with one character.
The correction came from global community development director for the game Adam Fletcher, who pointed out an update to a blog that had previously claimed that players wouldn’t be able to unlock mounts until after they’d finished the main campaign.
“Unlocked through completing a questline as you progress naturally through the main story campaign, Mounts have an assortment of customisation options available to them, such as different types of Mounts, Armor and Trophies.” Moreover, the post now reveals that “Once a mount is unlocked, it can be used in all game modes for any and all characters the player creates.”
As soon as you’ve finished the game once, though, you can start playing through it again with another one of the five Diablo 4 character classes – and use any of the mounts you’ve previously unlocked. The developers have also revealed the “assortment of customization options” that will be available, like the different types of mounts, armor, and trophies you can earn and equip.
One such example is the Cry of Ashava Mount Trophy, which is an item that you could have earned through either the Open Beta Early Access period or the upcoming Server Slam event. Once you’ve obtained it, you can then place it on your traveling partner and it’ll appear on their flank or saddle afterwards.
Community reaction to the initial post claiming that mounts would be endgame content was largely mixed. A certain Reddit user has said that introducing it after the main quest line “seems rather late,” while another has described this decision as a “truly baffling” one since the protagonist can apparently be seen riding a horse during the introductory cutscene. It seems then that this was just a miscommunication on Blizzard’s part, so players can rejoice in the knowledge they’ll be able to claim a mount at any time.
