A recent in-depth Diablo 4 Campfire Chat has given us an even closer look at the developer’s short- and long-term plans for their latest installment. According to the statements the team have made during the livestream, one of the changes they’re working on is the addition of a hardcore disconnect protection mechanic that will prevent or at least reduce the prevalence of server-related deaths for players.

However, Diablo 4 game director Joe Shely has noted that this hardcore mechanic will only be available if you have a Scroll of Escape in your inventory. If you do, then this item will automatically be consumed as soon as the server sees that you’ve disconnected. This will allow you to teleport safely to the closest central hub, thereby preventing your character from being deleted permanently.

Shely went on to mention that since Scrolls of Escape are limited in nature, this will naturally prevent players from abusing this mechanic in specific scenarios. This means you can’t simply turn off your Wi-Fi connection or unplug your router every time you’re close to dying. But with that said, it’s also important to keep in mind that the disconnect protection apparently isn’t foolproof yet so there may still be times when this feature doesn’t trigger.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to try out the Scroll of Escape mechanic just yet as the team has revealed that it will only be available at the start of Season 2. Luckily, the developers have announced that they’re also working on addressing some of the other server-related deaths that players have been experiencing such as the frustrating teleport bug. This means the likelihood of your character dying from a glitch should decrease over the next few weeks once a few hotfixes have rolled out.

While you wait for the Diablo 4 hardcore disconnect protection mechanic to arrive, though, we recommend taking a look at our guides on how to get a mount and how to get Coiling Wards in Diablo 4 so you can breeze through the content it offers quickly.
