Update 31/5: Piepora has tweeted once more since this story was originally published to correct a statement he made in error about the recent Diablo 4 server slam.

On his Twitter account, he says “The server build was not .9, but actually a version of our day one build! There will be *very few* changes between this build and the one players will be playing at launch. Deeply sorry for the confusion!”

His correction doesn’t change what we currently know about the game’s day one patch too much, other than the fact the changes may not be as comprehensive as players were led to believe but will likely still include some minor balance changes and bug fixes. But as Piepora himself adds “We will be evaluating the game and are prepared to make adjustments as we go to ensure a smooth gameplay experience. It’s as we’ve been saying all along: Launch is only the beginning!”

Original Story follows: Diablo 4 associate game director Joseph Piepiora has revealed that the upcoming ARPG installment will have a day one patch released during its early access phase. In his recent statement, Piepiora noted that the update will contain “balance changes and bug fixes,” so the prerelease builds you’ve been working on will essentially become useless upon launch.

Although he didn’t quite specify which Diablo 4 character classes would be affected by these changes, it’s safe to assume that all five will receive a number of alterations that should somewhat affect the game’s opening meta. It’s also important to keep in mind that the update will take effect immediately during the early access phase, so we suggest preordering either the Deluxe or Ultimate Editions to get a prompt feel for your preferred playstyle.

According to Joseph Piepiora’s post on Twitter, the upcoming patch “will represent the 1.0 build of D4, up from .9 that we had in place for the server slam.” Hopefully, this means the Necromancer will get a considerable buff as the skeleton-raising, corpse-controlling class had seen a sizable nerf during the previous three-day server slam period.

Unfortunately, the Diablo 4 day one patch notes are still yet to be revealed so this is merely speculation for the time being. However, we do expect it to be made available at some point in the next few days since the early access phase is already set to begin on June 2. Once it gets released, only then will you be able to make your preferred build for the game’s inaugural season.

With that said, we suggest checking out our guide on how to get a mount in Diablo 4 so you can immediately get a companion that will help you traverse the huge Sanctuary map quickly. Alternatively, we also recommend reading our Diablo 4 review as it will give you an idea of what to expect once you jump in.
