NetEase and Bungie’s long-rumoured Destiny mobile project is seemingly approaching release. Following leaks earlier this week, a developer for Destiny Rising has already spilled the beans.
The upcoming mobile game spin-off has yet to be formally announced by Bungie or NetEase. However, a NetEase developer has already listed the game on their public LinkedIn profile.
Destiny Rising has “high standards”
As spotted by The Game Post, former NetEase employee Garcia Anotts revealed they worked on a Destiny mobile game from 2018 until 2021.
As an engineer for the game, Anotts worked on “logic programming, system development, level gameplay implementation, and framework optimization” for the mobile game.
Anotts claimed the game merges MMOFPS gameplay with third-person shooting and RPG mechanics. Furthermore, the game is said to have “high standards” for a mobile game.
Many of the game’s leaked aspects were not discussed in the LinkedIn post. For example, leaks for the Destiny mobile title claim the game will be more like a hero shooter in terms of character creation, a wild departure from the mainline games.
A tumultuous development
Starting development back in 2018, Destiny Rising has been a long time coming. In that time, NetEase has released countless mobile games and Bungie has concluded the main Destiny storyline.
With the rapidly changing games industry resulting in games like Concord dying a week after launch, would a Destiny mobile game even succeed anymore? As player counts for Destiny 2 dwindle, this worry grows even larger.
As for Bungie, the iconic games studio is still working on additional content for Destiny 2 as well as its next major live-service game: Marathon. While the future of Bungie’s multiplayer titles is uncertain, the developer isn’t backing away from crafting massive online experiences.
Destiny 2 is available right now on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. The game can also be played on mobile via GeForce Now.
