The aftermath following Bungie’s launch of its saga-ending Destiny 2 DLC, The Final Shape, has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone involved. Despite the expansion’s roaring critical success, its sales performance fell short of the company’s targets, which, although it wasn’t the main cause, ultimately led to the studio laying off over 200 employees. But even though the future remains murky for the intergalactic looter shooter, the devs are already looking forward to their next foray into the FPS genre in Marathon.

Previously, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Bungie canceled its Destiny 2 spinoff, Payback, to focus on Marathon. However, the studio’s development on the upcoming extraction shooter may not be going according to plan. In the latest Friends Per Second podcast episode, Schreier revealed that “the sentiment is not great around [Marathon]” and that “people are pessimistic about it hitting its current planned deadline” of 2025, meaning the game could get delayed.

If this does happen, it would be Marathon’s second major delay since Bungie had already pushed back the game’s launch in late 2023 during its initial round of layoffs. It’s also concerning that, apart from the announcement trailer provided late last year, no other teasers have appeared since then. But since the studio hasn’t officially announced anything regarding its release, we’d recommend taking this information with a grain of salt, as always.

Now, if you’re a hardcore Destiny 2 fan, Bungie’s renewed focus on Marathon doesn’t mean your favorite looter shooter won’t get any more updates. Although the studio won’t release any more major expansions moving forward, it will still provide smaller content drops that you can sink your teeth into every now and then. The Destiny 2 team also recently revealed on their official X (formerly Twitter) account that they’ll “be talking about the future of Destiny soon,” so there’s still plenty to look forward to.
