When I was a kid, I used to really enjoy seeing the video game sales charts in magazines, and discovering what the next big game was that hit stores. That hasn’t changed even as I’ve grown as being able to dive into statistics and see what is performing well is always interesting. 2024 has been a great year for games so far, with titles such as Helldivers 2 blowing away all expectations, and the Elden Ring DLC seeing millions of players return to the game.
According to the latest report by Circana, Helldivers 2 has kept its strong sales going throughout May 2024, despite being hit by the PSN controversy. It did drop down from 2nd to 4th place when compared to April, but still remained in the top 5, beating out heavy hitters such as MLB: The Show 24, Minecraft, and Stellar Blade, as well as the newly released Homeworld 3 which debuted at number 14 and F1 24 which only managed to get to number 18 in its month 1 sales.
Despite a slight drop in the charts, another Sony IP saw a major boost in sales. Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut finally launched on PC, pushing the game from 71st all the way to 1st place for May 2024. Nintendo lost out on the top spot due to this with its Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake, but it did manage to secure second place, followed by Modern Warfare 3 remaining strong in third place across both April and May 2024.
Elsewhere on the list, Fallout 4 saw a strong holding in the charts following its next-gen update the previous month, although it did see a decline down to 11th place, and Mortal Kombat 1 is the only other game apart from Ghost of Tsushima to climb back into the top 20, going from 21st to 19th following the release of Ermac on April 23rd.
It will be interesting to see where Helldivers 2 lands next month when the June 2024 figures are released. By this time the PSN controversy had seen the game slip into a downward spiral that it has so far not been able to recover from, even dropping to less than 10,000 concurrent players. But, with the Escalation of Freedom update landing on August 6th, we should see a major boost in players as the community comes back to check out the new planets, missions, enemies, and modes.
