It’s been six years since the release of Death Stranding on PS4, but the game’s sequel is almost upon us. Released just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the cinematic Hideo Kojima adventure immediately became a beloved cult classic that’s now been released on PC, Xbox and even mobile.
Kojima Productions immediately jumped into production on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach after the release of the first game. However, game took considerably longer to develop due to the pandemic years slowing everything down.
Death Stranding 2 should’ve released years ago
Speaking to GQ, Kojima explained that Death Stranding 2 was originally planned to release years ago. Unfortunately, the pandemic meant that major scenes involving actors couldn’t be filmed as travel was heavily restricted.
“There was Covid,” Kojima told the outlet. “I was trying to shoot the beginning scene of Death Stranding 2, where Léa [Seydoux] comes to you, in the spring of 2020. The game would’ve been released in 2023, but I couldn’t scan actors, I couldn’t do the new casting.”
This major delay in production has resulted in the seemingly premature announcements of Kojima’s next two games. With development delayed, ideas spiralled, and Kojima was able to dream up OD, his upcoming horror game with Jordan Peele, and the Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor Physint.
“I might cry after I finish Death Stranding 2,” Kojima explained. “Maybe I won’t… I have the next project.”
After working on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for six years, Hideo Kojima is looking forward to branching out with new ideas. The creative has already explained that he has ideas for a third title in the series, but someone else will have to make it instead. Additionally, the game director is also planning to direct movies while Kojima Productions focuses on making games.
