From Software’s upcoming action-RPG Dark Souls 3 has scored 9/10 in the first UK review.
Reviewed in the latest issue of EDGE, the PS4 version was praised by the reviewer for its “will-sappingly difficult” boss fights and “tightly designed” areas, but was criticised for its familiarity during the opening third.
The game’s “astonishingly handsome” world also “lacks a little of the complexity of Miyazaki and From [Software] at their best”, the review states, buts its boss fights are “set in beautiful arenas and soundtracked by the finest Souls music to date”.
“With Dark Souls 3, Miyazaki has ensured his studio’s reputation remains intact, and delivered on our expectations,” the review says, “albeit a little too closely at times.”
The review does not discuss the game’s performance or its online mechanics.
Burns criticised Dark Souls 3 over similar issues during his preview earlier this month, of course, stating that “between the familiarity and (what appears to be) re-used assets there’s a huge sense of deja vu here”.
He concluded: “The genius of Miyazaki’s work is how the whole comes together, the interplay between world-building and exploration, how its lore is used for dreamlike revelations rather than lucid exposition. The issue so far is that we’ve had this dream before. Miyazaki has the problem everyone else has. He’s got to follow Bloodborne.”
