“Black Adam”, “Teth-Adam”, “Mighty Adam”, whatever you choose to call him matters little to him, as all he cares about is whether or not you’re in his way when he does what he feels is necessary, as embodied ably by Hollywood and Wrestling superstar, Dwayne Johnson, in the upcoming ‘Black Adam’ movie.

The latest entry in the DC Cinematic Universe is only a few short weeks away from release, teasing an epic story that stays true to the roots of the beloved anti-hero and sovereign nation leader as he makes his first foray into live action.

Giving us our best look yet at the movie’s story, the Justice Society, and promising plenty of pulse pounding, comic book worthy action.

What’s most exciting about the trailer though is that it seemingly confirms that the movie will give us a comics accurate Black Adam. Namely, a man who is neither wholly villain nor hero. As he walks fully the path of his own beliefs in what is right and what is wrong and what needs to be done to defend and protect these beliefs based on his own past trauma.

What is the story of ‘Black Adam’?

Per the official story synopsis for the movie:

“Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.”

Further to this, and a potential spoiler for anyone not familiar with Black Adam’s comic origins. So, if you don’t wish to be spoiled, please scroll on down to the next section.

Again, possible minor plot spoilers from this point on…

What the synopsis doesn’t mention is that the “ancient gods” who Black Adam receives his powers from are the Greek Pantheon, the same gods from whom Shazam draws his powers. As, in the DC Comics universe, Teth-Adam was the first champion of the ancient wizard, Shazam. But, when he allowed his powers to corrupt his ideals and desires, Shazam named him “Black Adam” and exiled him.

While there has been no confirmation yet (naturally, as it would be a wonderful surprise for fans when they see the movie for the first time) of either Djimon Honsu’s Wizard, Shazam, or Zachary Levi’s, Shazam, appearing in the movie.

I, personally, would be very surprised if we didn’t at least see the Wizard and/or had Adam discovering by movie’s end of Billy’s exploits as Shazam, tying this movie to the upcoming “Shazam” sequel, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods”.

End of possible minor plot spoilers.

Who stars in the ‘Black Adam’ movie?

Dwayne Johnson plays Teth-Adam/Black Adam

Pierce Brosnan plays Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate

Viola Davis returns to the DCCU playing Amanda Waller

Aldis Hodge plays Carter Hall/Hawkman

Noah Centineo plays Al Rothstein/Atom Smasher

Quintessa Swindell plays Maxine Hunkell/Cyclone

Sarah Shahi plays Adrianna Tomaz

What are the comic book histories of the ‘Black Adam’ characters?

All of the descriptions below, unless otherwise stated, come directly from the official DC Comics website and so please be aware that they may contain potential spoilers for plot points in the upcoming movie:

Black Adam:

“One of the world’s foremost wielders of magic, Black Adam has been both hero and villain over a life that’s spanned thousands of years.

Thousands of years before Billy Batson became a magically-empowered hero, the wizard Shazam selected another champion. Teth-Adam or “Mighty Adam” began as a hero of humanity, but then allowed his power to corrupt his ideals and desires. Now labeled Black Adam, he was exiled by Shazam, but returned in the modern day. A frequent enemy to Earth’s heroes, Black Adam believes he is the right person to lead humanity and any action he takes is necessary for the greater good.”

Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate:

Dr. Kent Nelson is Doctor Fate, a powerful sorcerer and agent for the Lords of Order who fights evil alongside his wife, Inza. His amulet, cloak and helmet are creations of the ancient Nabu who acts as his mentor and spiritual guide. He is a founding member of the Justice Society of America.”DC Fandom Database

Amanda Waller:

“If there’s one government bureaucrat who shouldn’t be messed with, it’s Amanda Waller, founder of the infamous Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad.

After losing her two eldest children and her husband to street criminals, Amanda Waller decided that conventional crime-fighting methods didn’t work, and that someone had to do whatever was necessary to keep the world safe from evil. A tireless tactician and expert political operator, she quickly moved up into the highest levels of government and put together a new version of an old black-ops team called Task Force X. Recruiting incarcerated super-villains, her Suicide Squad does the dirty work that heroes like the Justice League can’t or won’t. Regardless of what others think of her methods or morals, Amanda Waller gets the job done.”

Carter Hall/Hawkman:

“No DC superhero as lived has many lives as Hawkman, yet through each of them he has sought justice for humanity and happiness for his beloved Hawkgirl.

Since the days of World War II, there has always been an imposing figure with majestic wings and a striking bird-shaped helmet, brandishing ancient weaponry and standing alongside Earth’s greatest heroes in its time of need. A fierce warrior without equal, the hero known as Hawkman has been a human being trapped in an ancient Egyptian curse of endless death and rebirth, and at other times, an alien police officer sent to Earth to help defend it. Sometimes, he’s even been a combination of both.

Almost always at the side of his paramour—the warrior woman called Hawkgirl—Hawkman has defended our world from alien invaders and mystical threats alike, first as a member of the Justice Society of America, where he fought against the Axis powers, and later as a member of the Justice League, where he earned the respect of Earth’s greatest heroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Although there are very few characters with a history as strange and complex as Hawkman’s, whether it’s Carter Hall or Katar Hol beneath the mask, Hawkman is one of the DC Universe’s greatest heroic icons.”

Al Rothstein/Atom Smasher:

“Al Rothstein is a super-hero with the ability to grow in size and incredible strength. The godson of Golden Age, hero The Atom, he is part of a costumed legacy. Originally he used the name Nuklon, although he later evolved to become Atom Smasher. He has been a member of the Justice League, Justice Society, Infinity, Inc., Suicide Squad and the Conglomerate.”DC Fandom Database

Maxine Hunkell/Cyclone:

“Maxine Hunkel is the granddaughter of the original Red Tornado, Abigail “Ma” Hunkel, an honorary member of the Justice Society and later caretaker of their headquarters. Maxine grew up idolizing her grandmother’s allies in the JSA.

As a young girl, Maxine was once kidnapped by T.O. Morrow, the mad scientist who created the second Red Tornado, a powerful android. He injected her with Red Tornado technology nanobytes, though their effects did not manifest until years later.

Cheerful, bubbly, and extremely intelligent (4.0 GPA and a 1300 SAT score in high school), Maxine is a 19-year-old student at Harvard University and an avid fan of musical theater, particularly the play Wicked. However, her talkative nature and know-it-all personality often alienates her from her peers and leaves the young woman isolated. Her outcast status causes her to suffer from atypical depression.

In recent months, she has begun to manifest unusual superhuman abilities. A sneeze demolished her grandmother’s garage and, the next day, she awoke inside a tornado five hundred feet off the ground. The young woman soon realized that she has the power to manipulate wind.

When the Justice Society decides to expand its ranks and provide training to new heroes, Maxine is one of the first recruits on their list. She is invited to join the team by Power Girl and Mr. Terrific and accepts through extreme amounts of excitement (her motormouth response nearly causes them to revoke the offer). Shortly afterwards, she is introduced to the rest of the JSA and her fan girl personality becomes evident in her bubbling reaction to meeting her heroes, particularly fellow teen Stargirl. As a way to ease her pain over seeing Mr. America’s death, Stargirl takes her to a room full of colorful fabrics, and (playing on Maxine’s college major and interest, the theater) asks her to select her new outfit.

In her ‘rookie phase’ with the Justice Society, she helped defeat the Fourth Reich, assisted the Justice League during the Lightning Saga, and fought the Heartbreak Slayer when he attacked Justice Society headquarters. Along the way she visited the Fortress of Solitude and teamed up with the android Red Tornado.”
