Even before the release of Larian Studios’ brilliant CRPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 was modded to high heaven. Two years after release, the game’s official modding tools have been cracked to allow players to create entire custom campaigns

However, it seems that Larian itself is not quite satisfied with the state of its own modding tools right now. After leaving the game with Patch 8 to focus on its “next crazy thing”, the developer announced plans to further enhance the game’s modding capabilities.

Larian plans better Baldur’s Gate 3 mod kit

Speaking in an anniversary blog post, Larian celebrated the game’s two years of release as well as the “over 8,500 mods” and “265 MILLION mod downloads” on Mod.IO since the release of mod support in September. Yes, 250,000 of those downloads are specifically for Withers Big Naturals

Larian explained that the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3 “love seeing what you create”, and the team was inspired by the recent BG3 Modding Community’s Modathon event to further enhance the tools that allow players to customise the game.

“You’ve raised the bar with every mod, and we want to match that energy,” the developer told fans. “That’s why we’re working on expanding the official toolkit to give you even more freedom.”

There are a number of key issues for major mod creators with the current version of Larian’s modding tools. After talking to the massive team working on Path to Menzoberranzan, a colossal custom campaign with six-to-eight original companions, issues like animation limits and injecting music are still being cracked and figured out.

It doesn’t seem like Larian will be able to unlock full map editing due to the game’s use of the Dungeons and Dragons IP, but the studio also hasn’t taken down the cracked map tools that are available online.

Baldur’s Gate 3 modders have allowed players to experience Pokemon monster catching, sci-fi adventures, World of Warcraft locations and even Halo weapons. However, with a bit of help from Larian, they can create even crazier contraptions for players. As one such player, I’m incredibly excited.
