Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is turning into the next Skyrim as hundreds of modders work to keep the game alive as the developers turn their “full attention” to their next project

Following the cracking of the game’s mod tools last year, modders have been working on entirely new campaigns, including one inspired by World of Warcraft. However, the game’s talented fanbase is making massive advances in what’s possible within BG3 mods.

Baldur’s Gate 3 modders create countless possibilities

In an interview with PC Gamer, Baldur’s Gate 3 modder SquallyDaBeanz explained that the “community has done an amazing job delving into all the different systems that Larian used to make their game”. However, with cracked mod tools being used to make the most impressive mods, there’s a huge lack of documentation to help newcomers.

Nevertheless, modders are working on expanding their tools, developing pipelines to create new cutscenes, large maps, quest structures and even entirely new custom companions with their own dialogue, animations and more.

“The modding community leaders that have figured out how to add these features are amazing. It’s pure wizardry from my perspective, but I’m extremely grateful that I can now work with the full potential of the tools,” the modder explained. “I see a lot of progress being made in custom cutscenes and dialogue too, with several people working on adding entirely new companion characters.”

While early mods simply tried to make Astarion hotter (and failed), other mods have brought back cut content and added functional Pokeballs to the game. With the arrival of more powerful mod tools we could, one day, see fan-made expansions on the level of Fallout London.

“Most of the systems are already here, so I think we’ll see many of them refined, improved, and released this year,” the modder explained. “Once these tools are more wide-spread, I think we’ll see new levels and lands comparable to the Skyrim modding community!”
