Several pieces of concept artwork, reportedly from a Marvel MMO cancelled last week, have appeared online over the weekend.

The images were posted by one Ramiro Galan and spotted by Video Games Chronicle. Galan is a principal designer at Pixelkings, who were working on the project with Daybreak Games. The art appears to be a mock-up for the MMO’s character creator. They reveal that the game could have seen players join one of four factions based on Marvel teams. These included the X-Men, Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D and the Fantastic Four. According to Galan, the “emphasis was on rich and vibrant colours with stylistic tones that pay homage to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.”

Daybreak parent company EG7 announced the cancellation of a Marvel MMO last week. “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile,” read the announcement. “Size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.”

It’s not even the first cancelled Marvel MMO under the company’s umbrella. Reports in 2019 claimed a first attempt at Daybreak was shuttered after the studio ran into financial trouble. It would be two years later that internet sleuths would spot a new Marvel MMO in EG7’s financial reports. At the time of writing, it’s not clear how far the latest project was before its abrupt end.

The studios under the EG7 umbrella include Daybreak, AKA the former Sony Online Entertainment, responsible for Everquest. In the superhero MMO genre, they also include the development teams of superhero MMOs City of Heroes and DC Universe Online.
