Want to find the best co-op games on Xbox? This list has all the co-op games you could ever need. The Xbox was known as being one of the best for multiplayer gaming before most games moved from split-screen co-op to online. Even so, the Xbox has some heavy-hitting co-op games, some of which are best enjoyed on Xbox.

The Xbox isn’t just known for its best co-op games. We have several other guides you should read, such as the best RPGs on Xbox and the best open-world games on Xbox, all of which you can play right now.

Grand Theft Auto Online

GTA Online is arguably one of the best multiplayer and co-op experiences, especially on Xbox. This is thanks to the massive sandbox world you fully roam around. In GTA Online, you create a character and can immediately get stuck into building a criminal enterprise and making money. The best part is you and your friends can party up and start to run things together while also tackling missions, mini-games, and pretty much doing everything you want. Our review of Grand Theft Auto 5, where GTA Online first became popular, praises several aspects of the sandbox world.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

If you’re looking for a deep and detailed RPG multiplayer game, then Monster Hunter World and its gigantic Iceborne expansion is worth looking up. Monster Hunter World is fantastic and the multiplayer gameplay is extremely satisfying. Together with your friends you can hunt gigantic monsters, gather to your heart’s content, and strategise the best ways to deal with some of the harder hunts in the game. Monster Hunter World is a wholly unique experience, and the co-op is some of the best you’ll ever see in an action RPG. If you want to know more, read our review of Monster Hunter World.

Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead is the original zombie shooter that made its debut on the Xbox and remains only on Xbox and PC with the sequel Left 4 Dead 2. The premise is simple: shoot and survive your way through long multi-stage maps to escape the undead horde. This four-player shooter is one of the best on Xbox, giving a brilliant survival horror experience for you and your friends. Zombies are fast while bullets and healing can be scarce. Left 4 Dead 2 also includes all missions from the first game, making it the best way to experience the game. Our review of Left 4 Dead 2 praises the improved mechanics, characters, and graphics.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is the ultimate pirate co-op experience. You choose a character, invite your friends to make a crew, and set off across the ocean wreaking havoc, looking for buried treasure, hassling other people you meet, shipwrecking or stealing other ships, and so much more. Sea of Thieves is funny and enjoyable, but this is only true when playing with your friends. Make sure you check out our review of Sea of Thieves for more details.

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2 is chaos incarnate and it might bring about more rage and arguing than Monopoly or Mario Kart. In Overcooked, you and your friends do missions in a restaurant setting and each time you will have to divvy up the labour to make sure someone is cooking, chopping, cleaning plates, and serving customers the correct order. All of this is on a time limit and missions get progressively harder, so co-op and communication are vital to success. We praised the hectic and chaotic nature of Overcooked 2 in our review.

Portal 2

Portal 2 is the stellar sequel to Portal, and this time there is a fully dedicated co-op campaign. In Portal 2, you and your friend play as two Aperture robots and you must work together to get through challenging puzzles using your brains and teamwork. Make sure you give each other regular high-fives as you conquer classic Portal puzzles, full of the same charm and wit from the first game. Our review of Portal 2 had many great things to say about the co-op.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is arguably the king of the battle royale shooter. With two friends you can take on the BR mode and fight to become the last team standing, or you can group up and test your skill in the other multiplayer modes Apex Legends has to offer. With team deathmatch, gun-run, and other modes on a rotating playlist, Apex is much more than a battle royale. The gunplay and movement in Apex are unmatched by other modern shooters, making for an extremely satisfying and tactical co-op experience.

Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic is another tactical team-based shooter game, with more of an emphasis on material collection and survival. Each mission takes you to a planet and a group of four friends can take these on. In Deep Rock Galactic, you have to gather materials, shoot aliens, and uncover multiple secrets in each randomly generated level. The four-player co-op is thoroughly enjoyable and the gunplay is about what you’d expect, but it’s the banter and strategy that make this game so good. If you don’t rock and stone, you certainly ain’t coming home.

Human Fall Flat

If you’re in the mood for a more silly co-op experience, then the physics puzzle game Human Fall Flat is one of the best. In Human Fall Flat, you play as walking ragdolls and your button presses control arm, leg, and hand movements. The main aspect of Human Fall Flat is grabbing onto things to solve puzzles, but due to the janky way it works and how funny it looks, the game is hysterical to play with friends. If you can even get past trolling each other, you’ll need to use all your combined brain power to get through the tricky levels.

Spelunky 2

Spelunky 2 is exactly what it sounds like, a game where you go spelunking through deep caverns and caves. As a sequel, many of the systems from the original have been improved and much of the gameplay is the same, only harder this time around. Spelunky 2 is hilarious and difficult, mostly because the collateral damage from playing co-op is never-ending and you can’t quite predict when someone is going to pull a prank or try and steal all the treasure. Spelunky co-op is all about working together, but it is far too funny – and, easy – to not do this which leads to hilarious results and potentially damaged friendships.

Rocket League

Rocket League is brilliant for co-op gameplay and it is a simple game that is executed beautifully. In what is essentially remote-controlled car football, your objective in every match is to score more than the opposite team. You can play with your friends against others online or you can play against them for the true test of friendship. From pulling off sweet mid-air trick shots to blatantly crashing directly into an opponent’s car, Rocket League provides hours of rage and fun in equal measure.

The Quarry

The Quarry is one of the latest interactive horror movie games made by Supermassive Games. Until Dawn was the studio’s first foray into this genre and it has built up a huge library of these games where you play characters in typical horror-movie situations. In The Quarry, you and eight friends can play together and control the fate of different characters, making them make stupid decisions or maybe take them on a more rational route. The Quarry is the ultimate test to see how well you’d survive a horror film and it is brilliant with friends. We weren’t too thrilled with the game overall in our review of The Quarry, but playing it co-op makes up for a lot of shortcomings.

These are the best co-op games on Xbox and we will make sure to add more to this list as time goes on, so make sure you check back for updates. Elsewhere on the Xbox, you can read our list of the best games on Xbox Game Pass and the best FPS games on Xbox.
