Mages are one of the most popular classes in World of Warcraft due to their magical abilities being invaluable in raids. Dragonflight‘s, WoW’s newest expansion in its first season, is no different in this regard.

However, not every player might want to level up with friends or in a party. On the contrary, many players prefer leveling up alone by grinding dungeons without the assistance of anyone else.

If this applies to you, then you’ll need to first decide which of the three mage specs to pick, as not all of them are suitable for solo leveling.

Before we go through which spec is best for solo leveling your mage character in Dragonflight, we believe it’s important that you know the core differences between each of the three specs when it comes to leveling them up alone.

We will be ranking down the three mage specs based on how much we recommend them.

Best Solo Leveling Spec for Mage in Dragonflight

3. Fire Mage

The first Mage spec, and the one we recommend last for solo leveling, is Fire. Although they have very high burst damage, the thing with fire mages is that while questing on your own you might feel like you’re an unstoppable force. Unfortunately, that all changes as soon as your combustion is up, after which your damage falls off drastically.

Not only that, but the high cooldowns of fire mages make them a poor choice for players looking to play solo. On one hand, you’re extremely powerful during cooldowns. However, you’re as close to defenseless as possible without them.

2. Arcane Mage

If we had made this guide before Dragonflight came out, chances are the Arcane spec would have been the least recommended because of how high the mana consumption cost used to be.

Luckily, in recent times the mana consumption has gotten much more manageable, making Arcane a pretty good spec for beginners. However, the one disadvantage it still has is that most of its AoE abilities (or at least the ones that do the most damage) require you to get up close and personal. For solo questing, this is a very bad idea as it can lead to unfavorable outcomes.

1. Frost Mage

As it has been for past expansions, the Frost Mage spec continues to be the best spec for solo leveling. Although it doesn’t have the highest damage output, the one thing that sets it apart from the other two specs is the ability to root and slow down targets, which gives you more than enough time to take them out without getting damaged yourself.

Additionally, as a Frost Mage, how reliable your damage is isn’t affected by external factors such as Arcane charges or hot streaks, making playing this particular spec much less complicated for new mages.

Final Thoughts

With that said, the Frost Mage spec is by far the best solo leveling spec, even in the current expansion. However, Arcane isn’t too far behind either and is only in second place because of the close-range AoE abilities and Arcane charges.
