Yes, Starfield does have cross save and cross progression, meaning you can continue playing on either the PC or Xbox Series X|S. Since the game’s store page confirms that Starfield is a an Xbox ‘Play Anywhere’ title, this means you’ll be able to pick up where you left off on either platform as long as you purchase the digital version. If you buy a physical edition, however, you will only be able to play it on the Microsoft gaming console.
Do all versions of Starfield have cross-save?
It’s important to keep in mind that cross save and cross progression can only be used if you purchase the game through the Xbox Store. Since Steam and the Game Pass app are two completely different entities, you can only play it on the former if you choose to buy it there. This basically means that cross save only works between your Microsoft account or on your Steam account, though they don’t really cross over. Starfield also isn’t Steam Deck-compatible at the time of writing, so Steam players won’t be able to continue your Settled Systems saga on the go.
You might think that your best option is to pick the Xbox version for now as you will be able to play across different Microsoft platforms with ease – including your Windows PC and Xbox. It’s also going to be available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. However, the potential for Starfield to arrive on Steam Deck is bubbling, and is seeming more and more likely as time goes on. In light of this, picking up Starfield via Microsoft, Game Pass subscription, or Steam will give you access to use cross-save and cross progression.
