Ammo is fairly common in the game; you should have about 200 in your inventory to be safe. Finally, a grade three helmet is always safer than a grade two, no matter the usability left on the helmet.
A grade 3 helmet can save you from death-by-headshot from every rifle bar an AWM, even if it will smash on impact, while a fully functional grade 2 is susceptible to most snipers.
