Are you wondering how to get Greninja in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? Greninja is the final evolution of the Water-type starter Pokemon of Generation VI, Froakie. The popularity of Greninja is well-deserved; not only did it play a pivotal role in the Pokemon animated series, but the capabilities and characteristics it possesses also make it an excellent choice for battles, be they casual or competitive.

However, given the recent pattern of newer Pokemon games not including a significant amount of Pokémon from their rosters, many Greninja fans are curious as to whether or not they can catch it in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Is Greninja in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Greninja was available to catch on January 27th – 28th 2023, during the 7 Star Tera Raid Event, and again on February 10th – 12th 2023.

To participate in the 7 Star Tera Raids, you need to have unlocked 6 Star Tera Raids, this is unlocked once you have completed the game, completed the Academy Ace Tournament and participated in a number of raids. Once done, Professor Jacq will notify you about the Black Tera Crystals (7 Star Tera Raids).

If you are successful in capturing Greninja at the 7 Star Tera Raid event, although Greninja won’t appear in the Pokedex, you will still be able to breed Greninja with a Ditto and then hatch Froakie from the egg.

However if you aren’t able to catch Greninja during the 7 Star Tera Raid event, then don’t fear, there are other ways to get Froakie and then evolve it into Greninja. One method is to see if your friend has Greninja, ask them to breed a Froakie for you and then trade with you. The second method may take longer, you can use the surprise trade feature and see if you are lucky enough to get a Froakie or Greninja.

Thanks to the Indigo Disk DLC, you can also now catch Froakie by upgrading the biomes of the Blueberry Academy Terarium. Doing this will make Froakie spawn in the Coastal Biome so you can catch it and evolve it into Greninja on your own.

What Type of Pokémon is Greninja?

Greninja is a blue frog-like Pokemon that has its tongue wrapped around its neck similar to a scarf and, as apparent in its name, takes its aesthetics from ninjas. It uses its lightning-fast speed to throw off its foes, allowing it to strike them with devastating blows before they have a chance to defend themselves.

Greninja is a Pokémon that places a strong emphasis on offense as it has high stats for Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. This is balanced by its low values for HP, Defense and Special Defense. This makes Greninja a lethal glass cannon that you can use to take your enemies out with.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Greninja is weak to electric, grass, fighting, bug, and fairy-type moves. This Pokemon is resistant to fire, water, ice, ghost, dark, and steel-type moves.

While Greninja has a dual typing in Water and Dark, it has a game changing Hidden Ability in the form of Protean. This ability causes Greninja to change its type to match the type of the move it most recently used. In conjunction with Greninja’s extensive repertoire of different types of attacks, this enables Greninja to strategically toy with the opponent’s strategies by continuously altering its weaknesses while engaged in combat.

Greninja is a great Pokemon that may be one of the best Water type starter evolutions in the series. Its stats and the Hidden Ability Protean make it a very great Pokemon for combat and is a great addition to your team if you’re looking for a glass cannon to sweep enemies.
