Several quests in Path of Exile 2 offer players a chance to unlock permanent boosts when completed. These all serve to make your character stronger – and you need every bit of help to reach the endgame. These boosts are often hidden behind side quests in the game’s (current) three Acts. Some offer a choice between a few buffs, and we’re going to walk you through one of them called Ancient Vows, found in Act 2.

How to complete the Ancient Vows quest in PoE2

This quest will take you on a journey through Act 2’s Vastiri Plains, looking for two pieces of a relic. Then, you have to combine the two pieces on an altar, which will let you pick between two permanent buffs.

You will get this quest by looting one of the two relic pieces – it can be either one of them, so it just depends on which one’s area you visit first during the Act’s main quest. Both relics are a random drop from the area’s monsters. Here’s what you’re looking for and where to find it:

After finding the two relics, you have to combine them at an altar. To find the altar, called Medallion for some reason, head over to Valley of the Titans. The Medallion spawns at different places depending on the map layout you get, but always close to the area’s Waypoint. So, when you find the Waypoint, you’ll find it nearby. Approach the steps and click on the Medallion (if you can’t see it, switch on the “Always Highlight” option in the Interface settings). Place the two relics from your inventory into the slot and the quest will be complete. Now you can pick one of the two offered buffs.

Which buff to pick from the Ancient Vows reward?

Completing the quest will offer you a choice between two buffs:

  • 30% increased Charm Charges gained
  • 15% increased Mana Recovery from Flasks

You can pick one or the other, but most importantly, you can change your choice at any time. That’s why the Waypoint is so close to the Medallion – so you can come back and conveniently change your pick. Note that some of the other choice-based buffs don’t work this way.

Picking one or the other largely depends on your class and build. You should pick the one that synergizes with it or shores up a weakness. For example, if you’re playing a mana-hungry build, like many Sorceress, Mercenary, and Witch builds, you should pick the Mana Recovery buff. On the other hand, Charm Charges are great if you find yourself on the receiving end of a lot of Ailment attacks. Many melee builds have to eat a few hits while fighting, for example. The choice is ultimately yours, and the ability to change them up gives you the freedom to try out the buffs and find the one that works best for you.
